Getting started

↑ All topics
What is Help Never Hurts?
One place to find charities and volunteer events that help people, animals and the planet, and to share the good you do with friends. When you donate or volunteer, post it, and your homies can high five it.
Is it free?
Yes, completely free. There are no fees, ads or paid plans.
Do I need an account?
No. You can browse charities, events and public posts without one. You'll need a free account to post, high five, comment, RSVP, follow or join groups.
How do I sign up?
Tap Join free and use your email, or Google or Facebook if they're shown. A few quick welcome steps then help you set your area, follow some causes and find friends. You can skip any of them.
I forgot my password.
Use Forgot password on the login page. We'll email you a link that works once and expires after an hour. You can log in with your email or your @username.

My profile

↑ All topics
How do I change my photo, cover photo or bio?
Go to Settings. You can also add or change your cover photo right on your profile. Big phone photos are fine; we resize them for you.
Can I change my username?
Yes, in Settings. Usernames are lowercase. Your old @username stops working, so links to your old profile and invite link will too.
How do I set or change my area?
In Settings → Your area, enter your ZIP code or tap “Use my location”. Your area decides which events and posts show as “near you”, and your profile shows the city.
Who can see my profile?
Anyone can see your name, photo, bio, city and your public posts. Posts you shared with “Just my homies and followers” or “Only me” stay hidden from everyone else.
What are favorite causes?
Up to 12 charities you love, shown on your profile. Add them in Settings: start typing a name (or initials) and pick from the list.
How do I delete my account?
Email hello@helpneverhurts.com from the address on your account and we'll delete it along with everything you've posted.

Posts & sharing

↑ All topics
How do I share a donation or volunteer time?
Tap + Share your good, pick the charity, choose donated or volunteered, and add a photo or note if you like.
Do I have to show how much I gave?
No. Untick “Show the amount on my post” and your post just says you donated. Every size counts the same here.
Who can see my posts?
You choose for each post: 🌎 Everyone, 👥 Just my homies and followers, or 🔒 Only me (handy for keeping track privately).
Can I edit or delete a post?
You can delete any of your posts from the post itself. Editing isn't available yet, so delete it and post again if something's wrong.
What's a High Five?
It's how you cheer someone on. Tap High Five on any post; the owner gets a notification. You can also give a thumbs up to comments.
How do I tag someone?
Type @ followed by their name in a comment or caption and pick them from the list. They'll get a notification if they're allowed to see the post.
Why does my photo look different after uploading?
Photos are resized and converted on your device before uploading so they load fast. iPhone photos (HEIC) work too.

Donations & money

↑ All topics
Do I donate through Help Never Hurts?
No. You donate on the charity's own website, then share it here. Your money goes straight to them and we never take a cut.
Will I get a tax receipt?
Yes, from the charity, since you gave to them directly. Help Never Hurts never handles your payment.
Are donations checked?
No. Posts are shared by members themselves. This is about inspiring each other, not keeping score.
I give every month. Do I have to post each time?
No. Set up a monthly donation (or tick “I give this every month” when you post) and we'll post it for you on that day each month. You can pause or delete it any time in Settings.

Charities

↑ All topics
How are charities chosen?
Every charity on Find a cause is a registered U.S. 501(c)(3) nonprofit that we've checked, covering people, animals and the planet.
My charity isn't listed. Can I add it?
Yes. Add it as a favorite cause in Settings: we search the IRS list of 501(c)(3) charities, so most U.S. nonprofits are there. You can then post donations to it. We review new charities before they appear on Find a cause.
Why can't I find a particular organization?
We only include 501(c)(3) charities, so groups like political or lobbying organizations aren't available. Try the charity's official name or initials.
What does following a charity do?
Their events show up under “My organizations” on the events page.
I run a charity. How do we get listed?
Email hello@helpneverhurts.com. Send your public news (RSS) and events calendar (iCal) links and your page will update itself. More for organizations.

Volunteer events

↑ All topics
How do I find events near me?
Set your area on the events page, then choose how far you'll travel (10, 25, 50 miles or anywhere). Online events always show. Switch to calendar view to see a whole month.
What does RSVP do?
It tells the community you're going and sends you a reminder before the event. It doesn't sign you up with the charity, so follow their link if they ask you to register.
Can I add events to my calendar?
Yes. Every event page has Google Calendar and Apple / Outlook buttons. For everything you RSVP to, copy your personal calendar feed from Settings and new RSVPs appear on their own.
Where do events come from?
Straight from the charities' own event calendars, updated every day.

Homies & following

↑ All topics
What's the difference between a homie and following?
Homies are two-way friends: one of you asks and the other accepts. Following is one-way, like following someone you admire. Homies' posts show first in your feed.
How do I add a homie?
Search on the Homies page or tap Add homie on someone's profile. They'll get a request to accept.
How do I invite friends who aren't on here?
Tap 💌 Invite friends on the Homies page to share your personal link. When they join, you're the first person suggested to them.
Can I remove a homie?
Yes, from their profile or your Homies page. They aren't notified, and declined requests are deleted quietly too.
What are the feed tabs?
Near you shows posts from your homies and people around your area. Homies shows only your homies. Following shows people you follow.

Groups

↑ All topics
What is a group?
A private circle — family, friends, school, work, a team, faith group or neighbors — with its own messages. Only members can see a group or anything in it.
How do I start one?
Go to Groups and use Start a group. You become its organizer.
How do I invite people?
Invite members by name, or anyone by email. Nobody is added without accepting; email invites get a join link that works even if they still need to sign up.
Will I get emails from my groups?
New messages always show in your notifications. Members can also tick “Also email” on important messages, which emails everyone who left “Email me” on for that group. Turn it off any time on the group page.
What can the organizer do?
Edit the group, remove people, hand over to another member, or delete the group. Anyone else can leave whenever they like; the organizer hands over first.
Are there limits?
Up to 200 members per group and 20 groups you organize.

Notifications

↑ All topics
What will I be notified about?
High fives, comments, @mentions, comment thumbs ups, new followers, homie requests, group invites and messages, event reminders, and your monthly posts going up.
Do you send emails?
Only for password resets, group invites, and group messages you've chosen to get by email. Everything else stays in the 🔔 bell.
How do I clear the red dot?
Open Notifications and everything there is marked as read.

Privacy & safety

↑ All topics
Is my exact location shared?
No. If you use “Use my location”, we round it to about half a mile before saving it, and others only ever see your city.
Do you sell my data?
No. We don't sell your information and there are no ads. Our privacy policy explains what we collect and who it's shared with.
Someone posted something inappropriate. What do I do?
Email hello@helpneverhurts.com with a link to the post or profile. We can remove posts and suspend accounts.
Is my password safe?
Passwords are stored scrambled (hashed), never in plain text, so not even we can read them. Repeated wrong guesses lock an account for a few minutes to stop break-in attempts.
